nothing is really cheap in australia, you'll survive with 1000 bucks, no shopping.hehe, and not much of eating out.:)

How long are you in Aussie? Eating out, even for the most basic of items is NOT CHEAP. However, portions are huge, so you could prolly split them across a couple or maybe even three meals :D

Is the A$1k your whole budget for the 1 month stay or is it just for food? If it's for everything including food, lodging, transportation etc, it's not a lot of money. You're probably gonna have to find some ways to be really creative with your spending. But the good thing about Australia is that it's really backpacker friendly and there's a whole range of activities you can do that will fit nicely into a backpacker's budget :)

Having said that, if I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about the effect of food. Just eat what you set your eye on (and what your budget will allow). I mean, half the fun of traveling to foreign lands esp. for foodie types is getting to taste food and cuisine you wouldn't normally get back home. Eat as much as you want (within reason), but maximise your physical movements too, like walking, cycling, taking public transportation etc. I think it should balance out in the end because you're doing as much exercise as you possibly can every day (even if you don't really consider it exercise).

P/s I don't consider myself a foodie, but I love eating, as can be attributed to the prosperity of my mid-section. For me, the method I'm using to tackle this problem is to focus on exercise rather than on dieting since I love eating so much. I'm currently in my 3rd month of a self-imposed 3-5 hours walking per week programme and I've found that even as early as one month into the programme, my body size has dropped noticeably without me changing my eating habits too much. All I have to do is make sure that I do extra walking if I binge on something or if I decide to treat myself with chocolate or ice-cream. It works! :)

Not sure how this has affected my weight as I haven't measured myself since I started the programme, but I guess it doesn't really matter how much weight I lost (if I lost at all) as I'm fitting into the clothes I want to wear and I'm starting to enjoy my reflection in the mirror more ;p
